Reggie Sultan, was born July 1955 in Alice Springs, Northern Territory.
school in the Alice Springs at the Convent School, and is a self taught
artist, learning first at the convent school in Alice Springs.
Reggie Sultan's paintings are all over the world and Australia.
Reggie normally travels up and down the Northern Territory every year selling paintings for fuel and food at Roadhouses and Galleries along the way.
He is a KAYTJA person from around Barrow Creek his mothers’ country; he is part aboriginal and part Afghan.
My father was a descendant of the Afghan camel drivers who put the railway up from Maree to Oonadatta to Alice Springs in the 1900.
My Aboriginal family is from the Kaytja clan of Barrow Creek Northern Territory Australia.
His Mother and Father
are from Marree in South Australia. Reggie has seven brothers and six
sisters all of whom live in the Northern Territory.
His ambition is to own a lot of land and a speed boat named Suzie
Reggie has now written a book about his troubled childhood called “An Uncontrollable Child”.
It tells of his time as a state ward and in State Boys Homes.
He was in and out of a number of State reform institutions until he was 17.
He was then sent to work on a number of
cattle stations in the Northern Territory and Queensland.
Reggie had been interested in painting as a child and then as a young man he lived with a women from Hermannsburg. Her father and her brother were landscape artists in the style of Albert Namatjirra who was one of the most famous early aboriginal artists.
He used to sit with them in their
artist camp and started paint landscapes He used to paint them and throw
them away until people started telling him they were good enough to
From Landscapes he progressed to Dot Paintings using traditional Aboriginal Symbols and a dotted background using acrylic on canvas.
Reggie was living in Alice Springs and felt that all the artists were doing the same thing producing dot paintings and he wanted to try something different and he worked on developing his leaf and speckled background paintings, which is now his signature style
