The major tourism attraction is Katherine Gorge (Nitmiluk) aprox 350 km southeast of Darwin.
This is a National Park that is owned by the Jawoyn Aboriginal people and managed jointly with Parks and Wildlife.
The gorge is 12 km long with walls of up to 70 metres high.
The best time to visit is in the dry May to September as in the Wet flooding can close the gorge.
You can camp in the park either at powered caravan and tent sites at the Gorge and there are also some campsites along the walking tracks and on the river within the Park.
Just respect the crocodiles and do not camp close to the water as you may end up as some large reptiles dinner.
Many Tourists purchase crocodile insurance to assist their family, should they be eaten.
You can take a guided boat tour down the gorges.
There is a 2 hour cruise of a half day cruise or you can hire a canoe from an hour up to overnight and camp along the river.
You can also see examples of Aboriginal Rock Art on the gorge walls as you travel down the river.
There are also walking tracks ranging from short walks to a five day walk from Katherine Gorge to the Edith Falls.
As a further aid to tourism there are also Helicopter flights available over the gorges.
The Town of Katherine is 300 kilometers from Darwin in the Northern Territory and it is a service town for the local cattle and mining industries.
Other attractions around Katherine are the Cutta Cutta
Caves, the Edith Falls and a little further to the South (110 km) are
the Mataranka Hot Springs.
Many of the Aboriginal Communities
in the Katherine region welcome visitors and day tours can be arranged
out of the Katherine Information center.
There is also
excellent fishing in the regions rivers such as the Victoria, Daly and
Roper rivers. Hand lines can be bought and used and no fishing license
is required which is great for tourism.
Within Katherine town there are many hotels and motels, caravan parks and back packer accommodation catering to the tourists, where you can comfortably base your self to enjoy what the region has to offer.
